Musical Viewer’s Guide

There are so many options out there for people who want to see musicians perform. Yet how do you know which is the best experience for you? Maybe you like one type of instrument more than another or you want to attend a high-energy performance. There are so many other factors to consider, but sometimes it’s easier to just sit back and listen to the music.

Jazz bands are typically a lot more relaxed than other ensemble types in the sense that they often perform in clubs in the city, and as such, the audience is encouraged to dance along with the music. You can also find jazz bands within high school and college, however. The music is either very upbeat or with a slower swing.

Instruments mainly include trumpet, saxophone, trombone and a rhythm section composed of piano, bass, guitar and drums.

“A lot of jazz isn’t necessarily playing the notes on a page, but creating new melodies and rhythms on the spot during improvisation. There is something beautiful to hearing a musician’s thoughts and feelings through the sound of their instrument during a solo,” said jazz musician Tyler Snodgrass.

Wind Ensemble is a term that is mostly seen in colleges. In that context, a wind ensemble is an audition-based group composed of woodwind, brass and percussion instruments. Since musicians must pass an audition to get accepted into the ensemble, the music is typically more challenging and the expectation of professionalism is higher.

While there is not an official dress code for the audience, it is frowned upon to wear overly casual clothes. The audience is also expected to follow certain protocols such as only clapping at the end of a piece instead of clapping between movements.

“Wind ensemble is comprised of some of the best musicians and play some of the most intricate pieces. I like going in and hearing that high level of skill performed,” Victoria Cidor stated, who attends many wind ensemble concerts.

Symphonic band is like a more relaxed version of wind ensemble. Musicians are not required to pass an audition in most symphonic bands, and as such, the music usually isn’t as difficult. You’ll find most, if not all, of the same instruments as you would in a wind ensemble.

“I like symphonic band because it appeals to a wide variety of audiences. There are technically challenging pieces that musicians can appreciate mixed with crowd pleasers that anyone can enjoy,” said Erica McNatt, who is a musician in a symphonic band.

Most marching bands members are in high school or college. The best way to see them perform is during halftime show at football games or at parades. There is also a more visual component to marching bands since they are not sitting on a stage.

Most marching bands include woodwinds, brass and percussion, but some have a guitar plugged into an amp. Marching bands are designed to rile up the audience, so it’s expected and encouraged to get loud and cheer, even while they’re still playing. This is a great option for people who want a high-energy experience.

“It’s fun to see the visuals alongside the music,” said Lexi Mazur, a long-time marching band fan.

These are only a few examples of the more popular types of bands. Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and try something new; there’s a world of music out there waiting for you to discover it!
